Matisse Posters & Modernist Simplicity

I sent a WhatsApp message to my fellow Strathmore Interiors workmate, Shelley, yesterday afternoon at about 4pm.

“I think we need to stock some Matisse posters” I said. Shelley came back to me right away. “That’s so weird”, she remarked, “Look at the images I was just putting together for a new range.” And sometimes it just happens like that at Strathmore Interiors, a couple of us are having similar ideas at the same time. It's absolutely perfect serendipity!

Wow! It's so crazy how closely many of these prints resemble the style that Henri Matisse was playing with in the 1950's so closely. This period is referred to as Matisse’s “Cut Out” period, as we very literally had taken to cutting out colourful pieces of paper and essentially creating murals.

I got to experience a Matisse exhibition myself back in February this year. The exhibition was held at The Art Gallery of NSW. I absolutely loved the cut-out style, and it was not the kind of art that I has associated with Henri Matisse in the past, but I think it is going to be most popular for modern tastes and décor right now, don't you?

Matisse had a career diverse in styles and mediums which often told the story of the different time periods he lived through, and there were many, as Henri lived until 84 and through both world wars! From Fauvism to Post Impressionism to Modernism, Henri was considered inventive and bold.

The Matisse poster prints we have chosen for Strathmore Interiors fall within the modernist style, many from the "cut out" period. We think they really fall in line with what we are seeing is popular in the contemporary interior design space for 2022-2023.
